Awesome answers Daniel! It's good to see my spelling correction worked :)
Krista :D Gday Daniel, i'd just like to start by saying great page, and i really appreciate that you have taken the time to have a read of some of the other students pages in the class. My favourite answer of yours would be in response to the first qestion 'What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?'. The answer shows a lot of thought and just a terrific answer all together. I'll be updating my page shortly and it would do me really good if you could just have a quick read and perhaps a small comment. Regards Jack Wenlock
Week 1 What is the best piece of advice you have ever received? The best piece of advice I have been given is, be smart and stay away from drugs and excessive amounts of alcohol. My parents and especially my grandparents often tell me to stay clear of drugs and keep your distance from drug dealing. My grandparents started informing me when I was around the age of 12, I didn't Know what drugs were at the time so I just ignored their preaching. I look back on that and I realise that they were just trying to protect me even though I didn't know what they were talking about. I had some sort of an idea but I didn't know the full depth of drug use and I didn’t have any background knowledge about drugs. I started to develop background knowledge and depth into drug and alcohol use when I did the wellbeing course in year 8. I look back on what my elders said to me and I recognise that 100% of the time they were correct. This year I learnt about drug use again and actually discovered that there are many more symptoms that can be brought on through drug use and especially tobacco. Some symptoms or problems which can be brought on through drug use are cardiovascular problems, mental problems such as depression and also physical problems such as ageing too early.
Week 2
What would happen if you threw a piece of trash on the ground? What if everyone did?
If everyone threw a piece of trash/rubbish on the ground our Earth will become unsustainable and we will find that it will be irreversible. With trash being scattered around the earth lethal toxins will evolve and these toxins will eventually end up in our human body. The rubbish will fill up drains and it will be floated out into sea, which then it will ruin the nature of life. The rubbish will eventually kill of all species of fauna and flora in the vast full of life ocean and it will completely ruin our food web of life. The fish will swallow these harmful toxins and they will soon die through intoxication problems and we will soon find that same problems will be occurring in our human civilisation too. If the 6882,000,000 people who currently live on Earth threw one piece of rubbish on the floor, it means that there will be more than 6882,000,000 pieces of rubbish on our floor which will be very unhealthy as lethal toxins such as methane will be released into our atmosphere and if ignited it will cause a colossal explosion. If we were living in an intoxicated world, flora and fauna won’t be able to thrive and we would find that we would be suffocating as there wouldn't be enough thriving trees to process the gasses into oxygen. If I through a piece of rubbish on the ground it wouldn't be as bad but it will eventually end up in the water ways and it will eventually end up in the ocean. It will kill some poor fish but because of my actions others will soon follow my lazy decision and our Earth will become unsustainable and unliveable for all species of life.
Week 3
What would you do if you saw a friend cheating - report it, confront the friend or nothing - and why?
If I saw a friend cheating on someone’s work I would report it but ask for it to be confidential. It would have to be confidential because if my friend found out that I have reported his foolish actions, it could destroy our relationship with one another. Trust is a very important value which every friendship must contain and without trust it is not a real friendship. Although, I would tell the teacher because in the long run cheating will not help and the teacher will become aware that they need some future assistance. I would tell the teacher in the best interest of my friend so he/she can get the best out of their schooling. I would also do it for the person my friend was cheating off as it is unfair on them that my friend was cheating off them and they should be notified of the situation. I would still trust my friend as after all we have a very tight bond but I would have to keep an eye on him just in case he does it to me. Friendships can be exceptional at times but during other times it can be very hard as trust can fade away in the matter of seconds.
What do you think courage means?
Courage means to be able to face difficult situations without fear or difficulty. Courage comes under the branch of bravery and to be brave you require to perform extraordinary things out of your regular comfort zone. Some people are courageous by nature but for others they lack the ability to come out of their comfort zone and face reality. To be brave you need to stand up to your fears and show what you're really capable of. I have this friend who is really courageous and he stands up to his fears by just letting go of them. To be courageous you need to have the inner-strength to face up to your fears such as simply saying no. I am at the age where peer pressure is becoming a problem as we are generally forced into making decisions we don't want to. To be courageous you need to stand up to your friend and simply say NO! At first it might be difficult to say no as you don't want to earn betrayal by your best friend, but if they were your friend you should be able to trust them as they influence your actions through peer pressure.
What do you think makes a good friend?
The qualities which you and your friend must share in a good relationship is mateship, cooperation, honesty and most important trust. A good friendship feeds off these qualities and it is vital that you share these qualities because your relationship won't succeed in the long-term and therefore it can also ruin other friendships as well. A friendship consistently needs cooperation as it is a necessity that you both get along even with your differences. Everyone is different in some way as no person is the same. There will be times in a friendship where you both disagree with one another or you have different points of views about an aspect. This is quite normal but when the disagreement escalates so much that you start to argue with one another that is when it becomes a problem and you just need to re-assess your relationship with that person and you probably both need some time to calm down and think about your relationship. Honesty and trust fall under the same category but no matter how strong or weak the friendship you need to be open with one another by being honest and earning each other’s trust. You need to be able trust each other under all circumstances but mistakes do happen and as the old saying goes “you learn from your mistakes.”
Week 4
What is your most indispensable possession and why?
My most indispensable possession is my iPod. You might think oh yeah that’s a lame answer, but in fact my iPod is not just used for casual music listening as it is also used for stimulating the brain when I go for a walk or a jog after school. I play rock and pop music when I go for a walk and I actually find it stimulates my brain by making me more alert and coordinated but it also assists me in boredom. I enjoy going for a walk, I have tried to go walking without my iPod but it is a bit hard as I am the sort of person who gets bored after about 20 minutes. When I go for a walk I usually find that melody of the music actually stimulates my brain by making me work harder during a workout and it actually makes me jog faster as I am jogging with the beat and the melody of the music. Other than using my iPod for when I do physical exercise is also used to stimulate my brain when I am trying to concentrate on completing general school work. I have discovered that classical music actually stimulates the human brain into thinking in a deeper process. It actually works for me when I am trying to concentrate and complete work, but it comes at a disadvantage as other features of the iPod can be distracting.
Week 5
What do you think about people polluting the environment?
I feel quite disgusted about the people who are polluting the environment. It is quite repulsive that our society has become too lenient towards pollution and the new tax which the government has released hopefully will work in the long-term. Pollution is increasing the Co2 levels on Earth as it is forming a thick blanket around the atmosphere and therefore heat can’t escape and Earth is heating up gradually. The new carbon tax is hopefully going to limit the amount of carbon being released into the atmosphere but the costs will sadly be forwarded onto customers as we the consumer have no choice. From past experiences electricity bills have gone through the roof in result of rising electricity bills, but it is only going to get worse so why doesn’t the government invest in more renewable energy than putting a price on carbon? Pollution doesn’t always come from carbon emissions as water pollution is another factor and litter is also another factor. Litter is by far one of the worst things that humans do that can be avoided. Pure laziness is the answer to why people litter as it is just too hard for them to put their rubbish in the bin which is only 20 metres away. I have a group of friends who always litter at the main campus of Mackillop College and I actually find it quite disgusting that they are literally throwing their rubbish amongst garden beds. They are just too lazy to put their rubbish in the bin but I feel if I say something it might ruin our friendship and I don’t want to go down that path.
Week 6
How do you feel when you do something wrong?
When I do something wrong I get very disappointed with myself and I can never let it rest over my shoulders as it actually makes me stress quite too much than necessary. I feel really guilty if I have done something bad to someone else and as my mother says “if you have nothing nice to say, don’t say anything.” Most of the time I think she is right by saying that but when I have done something bad to someone else I try to put myself in their shoes and I try to feel what they are feeling about the situation. I feel really guilty about the littlest things possible such as when I printed my work out and the questions were in the wrong order. As much as a try not to do something wrong I also think to myself that I’m only human and we learn from our mistakes. Last week I did something really bad to my sister as she fell of the trailer on the farm I laughed at her because she fell of the trailer but at the time I didn’t realise that the outcome could have been much worse than the bruises she sustained.
How do you feel when you do something that is very good?
When I do something that is really good I feel proud of myself and it brightens my day. Most of the time the actions which I perform are good not bad and I am very proud with myself that I have matured into doing good things for society not the other way around. When I do something that is beneficial to someone else, I feel proud that I am able to help people with my knowledge. I don’t like to be up myself but, I consider myself to be very mature and in saying so I believe that I go out of my way just so I can achieve high. I had an experience last week where one of my friends didn’t have any lunch so I gave some of my lunch to him. If I didn’t give him some lunch he would have been hungry until he got home which was indeed several hours away. Another situation of where I did something very good to some else is I stood up for one of my friends last year because he was being bullied. I stood up to him while sacrificing my dignity but the outcome of the situation was surprisingly excellent as both of us felt better after the situation.
Week 7
I wish there was a law that said... This would be a good law because...
I wish that there was a law that said mobile phones use by the driver in any vehicle should be prohibited. I think this would be a good law because any sort of mobile phone used by the driver is distracting and inappropriate use of mobile phones in cars can be deadly. If you are talking on your mobile phone while driving you can be fined but if you are using mobile phone via Bluetooth in your car or via speaker phone it is still more or less distracting and under certain circumstances it can actually be lethal. When operating any vehicle especially on the road where other people will be driving, it is especially important that you pay attention to focusing on the road rather than having an unnecessary conversation with your best mate. The only time which a mobile phone should be used in the car is for emergencies. On the news there has been much speculation over a device being installed in cars which stops the reception from the phone companies reaching your phone. In one way it is good as people won’t be able to use their phones while they’re driving but if an emergency were to occur and you couldn’t get out of the car then that is where the problem with the device starts to unfold.
Week 8
When you are angry, how do you look? When are you happiest? When have you felt lonely? When do you feel proud?
When I am angry I look very furious as I am not an easygoing person who takes whatever is thrown in my face. If someone or something makes me angry I sometimes get short tempered and I am not happy that this happens to me. Being angry is not a healthy thing so try not to get angry where possible. I am the happiest when I do something good for someone else or I achieve something which I have never achieved before. I am the happiest when I get really good marks for my school work and you can ask anyone who knows me and they’ll say exactly the same thing. I am also the happiest when I am around my family and friends. My friends and family make me who I am and without them I would not be able to be happy under any circumstances. I don’t really feel lonely but the only time which I felt lonely is when I caught the bus to the Werribee Plaza by myself without my mum knowing. I felt very lonely as I had nobody to talk to but I did have a conversation with my aunty when I met her in K-Mart. I feel proud when I do something good for myself or someone else. I am very proud when I get the top marks in assessments but I also feel proud when I go out of my way to help others in need. When I complete my school work I like to complete mine before I help anyone else but sometimes I need to relax and focus on someone else instead of me and this makes me proud that I am able to help someone else in need.
Week 9
Which quality do you dislike most about yourself - laziness, selfishness, childishness - and why?
The quality which I dislike the most about myself is the fact that I can be a bit lazy at doing my homework and sometimes I leave it to the last minute. I absolutely hate homework because I find myself sitting in my room most of the time completing homework or getting a head start in my schooling. Although I do all of my homework I can get a bit lazy at times and I forget to complete it but, it very rarely happens. I have a problem of leaving homework to the last minute because I have other homework to complete buy most of the time I leave homework to the last minute because I have other homework to complete but in saying that other times I am just purely lazy and I can’t be bothered to do it. Maybe if I dedicate myself more to my studies, I might find that I won’t leave homework such as assignments to the last minute. I never used to leave my homework to the last minute but, because I have found that I put in a lot more effort into my school work, I tend to take more time completing it and therefore it slows me down in other situations of completing homework.
Week 10
Why do you think prejudice exists in the world?
Prejudice exists in the world because we are only human and everyone makes mistakes for the good or unfortunately for the bad. Most of the time prejudice is an act of lack of knowledge about the target and sadly it can be an act of stereotyping such as “most Aboriginals are alcoholic” which in fact is false. This judgement was an act of stereotyping and this was judged like this because there was a lack of knowledge about Aboriginals or they disliked this specific race. Prejudice is an opinion that is targeted at a specific race, religion or a general irrational feeling which is unfortunately becoming more common in society today. Advertising on television can be prejudice at times as it can mislead you into believing something you don’t want to believe or it changed the way you think of a certain opinion. I remember when I was watching the Morning Show last week, there was an advertisement of an Australian wool quilt which was meant to be the best on the market. It persuaded me into believing that other Australian brands use wool from overseas to manufacture their quilts but I did some research and I discovered that there were 3 other brands which used Australian wool. This was an act of prejudice because they persuaded me into thinking a certain way which was unfavourable and sadly I’m not the only one who was conned into believing in something that wasn’t true.
